documentation of de·scried
1. To catch sight of (something difficult to discern).
2. To discover by careful observation or scrutiny; detect
de·scried was an installation created in 2013 that explored the ideas of public and private space as well as an abstraction of the human figure. Johanna is enamored by the mirror as she uses it frequently in her work. She takes inspiration from artists Dan Graham, Francesca Woodman, and Joan Jonas as she utilizes the idea of the figure with the mirror in a whole new dimension thus creating a third image between the two. In this installation, Johanna explored how viewers interacted with the piece as well as the mirrors inside of the space, interested in making them aware of their own being within the space.
This footage is meant to be played as a loop on three different screens but here is footage of the three-channels.
This is a true story about a girl I used to go to school with, a girl that was my friend. A few months before creating this film, I ran into her at a hair show we were modeling for. It had been years since I had seen her and immediately tears filled her eyes and flooded down her freshly painted face. Her mother and sister kept telling her to stop crying and that she would ruin her makeup as she insisted on introducing them to me. Like a video loop she repeated and pleaded, "This girl was so nice to me in high school when nobody else was, she was popular and pretty and still nice to me, she stood up for me when everyone picked on me." My face was flushed a bright crimson, not really knowing what to say. I hadn't quite understood the impact that I had on this beautiful girl's life or that I could even have an impact as such on anybody's life for that matter. I was flabbergasted that she had held onto those memories years later and it made me think of the idea of impaction and how that has on people. I felt guilty that I felt this way and also brought up memories of my past when I was once bullied and from then on became a bully myself. Makeup didn't matter to her as her tears streamed down her cheeks as she clung to me tightly. I knew I had to share her story and deal with the troubles and guilt that I was feeling from this unexpected run-in. This piece is very personal and dear to me and one of my first attempts at making an experimental documentary. You will see me visually perform a reversal of words, and emotions if you will, as she tells her story. Listen to what she has to say and take it all in.
Footage of Clear Your Throat
Clear Your Throat
"Clear Your Throat" was a video installation creating in 2013. The video dealt with ideas of subjectivity and questioned love. Johanna attempted to unfurl a relationship in a confined space acting as the privacy between two humans while inviting viewers to walk inside of the space and stand in-between (if feeling comfortable enough) the characters screaming, laughing, crying and interacting with each other. This piece explored not only the concept of love but the viewers interactions and reactions within the space.
